What are Fragrance Notes?

Ever wonder what makes a Fresh Scents fragrance so irresistible? Check out our quick guide into the layers of your favorite scents.

You can think of fragrance notes in much the same way as music notes. Each single element combines to create a beautiful melody, or in this case, room-filling fragrance. There are three categories of fragrance notes: top, middle, and base.

Top Notes

Top notes pave the way for the rest of the fragrance notes. This is your first impression, and the molecules of these notes tend to evaporate quickly.

Popular Top Notes: Lemon, Mint, Orange, Lavender

Middle Notes

Top notes transition into middle notes which are headier and make up the majority of the aroma. They are more complex than top notes and are meant to hold your attention.

Popular Middle Notes: Rose, Jasmine, Pepper, Nutmeg

Base Notes

In contrast to top notes, which are typically energizing and invigorating, base notes are often described as calming. These scents are made up of large, heavy molecules providing complexity, and making a lasting impression.

Popular Base Notes: Cedarwood, Patchouli, Vanilla, Musk
