Home Décor for Small Spaces

When you have limited space in a room, there are three things you need to keep in mind as you decorate. First, what do you want to achieve? Second, what does your budget look like? Third, seasonality.

First and foremost, what emotion do you want to evoke with your home décor? Are you hoping to create a calming atmosphere in a powder room, a warm and inviting vibe in your reading nook, or a clean and simple design in your petite living room? If you’re going for a calming atmosphere, minimize clutter, choose muted colors in the same family, and utilize creative storage methods so that various items can easily be stored away. One of the keys to home décor in small spaces is finding multi-purpose items that work for your look and help you stay organized. You can maximize space by combining seating and décor like in the photo below, and you can get the most out of your desk décor by using an inspirational sachet like, A Little Sparkle, Beleaf inYourself, or She Believed. The inspiring phrase will provide motivation, the design will complement your space, and the scent will help tie your look together!

Second, what does your budget allow? Do you need to upcycle some pieces you already have or sell some different items to create space in both your home and your budget? Ikea is a great way to find new décor items on a budget, many of which are multi-purpose. Check out their Small Storage section for ideas!

Third, seasonality. When working on décor for a small space, it’s always best to go with quality over quantity. One way to do this is by getting a set of three throw pillows and simply changing out the covers you use each season so they are always in the best hue. You can add a pop of color and seasonal fragrance by ordering a few sachets to suit the time of year also. They’ll look and smell great with your seasonal décor, and they are so compact you can store them in the smallest of drawers! Each sachet has a lifespan up to 4 months, so you can easily switch out each season. One more way to incorporate seasonality in your space is by switching out the photos you hang on the wall- feature your favorite family photos from each season and switch them out – it’s a great way to make the real estate you already have work for the look you want to achieve!
