Should I open my scented sachet? In a word, no. Opening a sachet adversely affects its lifetime and makes a bit of a mess. Here are some better ways to use a sachet..

It's one of the most common questions we get—and we understand why. You've got this beautifully designed envelope filled with amazing fragrance, and your instinct says tearing it open will make it smell even stronger.
But here's the short answer: no, don't open it.
Fresh Scents sachets are specifically designed to stay sealed. The paper envelope isn't just packaging—it's part of how the product works. Opening it won't give you more fragrance. It'll actually give you less.
Here's why.
Why You Shouldn't Open Your Sachet
1. The envelope controls the fragrance release.
The paper envelope is designed to let fragrance diffuse slowly and steadily over time. This controlled release is what allows Signature Collection™ sachets to last up to 6 months and Small Places Collection™ sachets to last up to 3 months.
If you open the envelope, the fragrance escapes all at once instead of gradually. What could have lasted months will fade in days.
2. The contents can damage surfaces.
Inside the sachet is vermiculite (a natural mineral) saturated with fragrance oil. If that fragrance oil comes into direct contact with certain surfaces—finished wood, leather, fabric, plastics, painted items—it can cause discoloration or damage.
The sealed envelope acts as a protective barrier. Opening it removes that protection and creates risk for your furniture, floors, and belongings.
3. It's messy.
Vermiculite is granular, similar to coarse sand. Once you open the envelope, those granules go everywhere. It's not a neat experience—and cleaning it up means you're losing fragrance in the process.
The Exception: One-Time Use
There are two situations where opening a sachet makes sense—but only if you're okay using up the entire sachet in one go.
Vacuum boost: Empty the sachet contents into your vacuum bag or canister before cleaning. As you vacuum, the fragrance will diffuse throughout the room. This works best with bagged vacuums; the effect is less noticeable with filter-based models.
Stovetop potpourri: Empty the contents into a pot of water and simmer on low heat. The steam carries the fragrance through your home for a powerful, immediate scent experience.
Both of these methods are valid uses—just know that they're one-and-done. You won't get months of fragrance; you'll get one great-smelling moment.
What to Do Instead of Opening Your Sachet
If you want stronger fragrance without sacrificing longevity, try these tips:
Shake to refresh. A gentle shake redistributes the fragrance oils inside and can give the scent a noticeable boost. This is the easiest way to "reactivate" a sachet that seems to be fading.
Place it in an enclosed space. Sachets work best in areas where the fragrance can concentrate—drawers, closets, bags, bins, and cars. Open rooms with lots of airflow will dilute the scent.
Use more than one. If you want stronger fragrance in a larger space, try using two or three sachets instead of one. This gives you more scent without shortening the lifespan of each sachet.
Check the placement. If you can't smell your sachet, it might just be in the wrong spot. Move it closer to where you spend time, or to a space with less airflow where the fragrance can build up.
Better Ways to Use Your Sachets
Instead of opening your sachet, try these ideas to get the most out of it:
In the closet: Loop the header card of a three-pack through a hanger and hang it with your clothes.
In drawers: Slip a sachet between folded clothes, linens, or towels.
In shoes: Tuck a sachet into boots or sneakers to keep them fresh.
In the car: Place a sachet under your seat or in the glove compartment.
In luggage: Store a sachet with your suitcase between trips to prevent musty smells.
In the trash can: Hide a sachet between the bin and the liner to neutralize odors.
Under the sink: Tuck one in the bathroom cabinet for subtle, steady freshness.
In gift boxes: Add a sachet to wrapped presents for an extra-special touch.
As décor: Display the hand-painted artwork on a small easel or frame your favorite design.

FAQs: Opening a Sachet
Will opening my sachet make it smell stronger? Temporarily, yes—but the scent will fade very quickly. You'll get a strong burst of fragrance followed by rapid dissipation. Keeping the sachet sealed gives you months of steady fragrance instead of a few days.
Can the contents damage my furniture? Yes. The fragrance oil inside sachets can cause discoloration or damage to finished wood, leather, plastics, acrylics, fabrics, and painted surfaces. The sealed envelope protects against this.
What if I already opened my sachet? You can still use the contents—just be careful where you put them. Consider the vacuum or stovetop methods mentioned above. Avoid letting the contents touch delicate surfaces directly.
How do I make my sachet smell stronger without opening it? Give it a gentle shake to refresh the scent. You can also move it to a more enclosed space where fragrance can concentrate, or add a second sachet to the same area.
Why does my sachet seem less fragrant than when I first got it? You may have gone "nose blind"—your brain tunes out familiar scents over time. Try shaking the sachet or moving it to a different location. If it's been several months, it may be time to replace it.
Final Thoughts
We know it's tempting to tear open that envelope and let the fragrance fly. But trust the design: Fresh Scents sachets are built to stay sealed. That's how they deliver months of steady, effortless fragrance without mess, maintenance, or damage to your belongings.
Keep it closed. Place it where you want fragrance. Shake to refresh. That's really all there is to it.
No flame. No mess. Just fresh.

No instructions that do not open. I just open mine 😭
I am in the UK and have received one of these for my birthday with the words Passion Flower on the front. UNFORTUNATELY no where on the packaging does it say SINGLE USE sachet or DO NOT OPEN.
It just shows a variety of places to use so I had no idea what was inside.
I have opened the packet to discover a load of lovely smelling powder like a nice Shake n Vac and am now trying to sellotape the top back together!
Very disappointing as not sure it will work the same.
Hopefully I’m not the first person to fall in love with one of your scents and to want to find a cologne/body spray with the same scent. I love Clean Clothes. It is so clean and fresh, but has a distinctive fragrance that is similar to some perfumes. I would love to find a something with a similar scent to use daily. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY “scent” (essential oils, body lotions/sprays, etc) who items for personal use that smell similar to Clean Clothes? Also, can you share the scent profile (what’s used to create the smell) That would help guide my search.
I got sachet how can I smell it with it in a bag so I open it sprinkle it in a jar. I don’t know how to use this. It’s you can’t smell anything cause it’s closed.
