The Back-to-School Checklist: Dorm Must-Haves That Don’t Break the Rules

So, you're heading to college. Maybe you're a rising senior who just committed to their dream school. Or maybe your bags are already half-packed. Either way, you’re probably wondering: What do I even bring? The pressure to have the “perfect” dorm setup is real. You want to fit in. You want to feel comfortable. And you definitely don’t want to get anything confiscated on day one by your RA.

Hey, I’ve been there. My name’s Caysi — a recent grad who lived in on-campus housing all four years, and trust me, I still think about some of the things I wish I’d known before moving in. Like the five candles I brought? Totally banned.

So, let’s get you set up for success. Here’s your no-stress, RA-approved checklist of dorm essentials — and what to leave off your Target haul.

❌ What NOT to Bring: The Forbidden Faves

  1. Candles
They’re cozy, they’re cute… and they’re absolutely against the rules. Dorms don’t allow open flames, which makes sense when you consider how small (and flammable) these rooms are.

  2. Space Heaters
You might get chilly, but this one’s a fire risk. Pile on the cozy blankets and keep a stash of hoodies nearby instead.

  3. Strip Lighting
LED strip lights are trendy, but not every dorm allows them. Double-check your school’s policy first, and look for string lights or desk lamps that are RA-approved.

  4. Air Fryers, Waffle Makers, and Panini Presses
Yes, even your favorite TikTok snack station is probably banned. Cooking appliances with heating elements are a dorm room don’t. Instead, bring a mini fridge, a microwave (if allowed), and a solid mug for late-night noodles.

  5. Electric Blankets
Sounds harmless, but many dorms ban them due to fire risk. Swap in a thick comforter or a wool blanket.

  6. Some Lamps + Extension Cords
Make sure your extension cords have surge protection, and avoid any lamps with exposed bulbs or neon tubing.

✅ What You’ll Actually Use (and Love)

Now that we’ve dodged the dorm drama, let’s talk must-haves that are allowed, are practical, and will make your space feel like you.

  1. Flameless Fragrance
When you’re sharing space (with laundry piles and leftover snacks), a little fresh scent goes a long way. I ended up using scented sachets in my dresser and laundry bin — the kind from Fresh Scents work well because they’re flame-free, last for months, and don’t take up any room.

2. Cozy Textiles
Think: chunky knit blankets, fun throw pillows, a mattress topper, and blackout curtains (if your dorm allows). Your future sleep-deprived self will thank you. I opted for a duvet cover so that I could change my look more regularly on a budget.

3. Shower Caddy + Flip Flops
Trust me. Communal bathrooms are no joke. This Love Shack Fancy option combines utility and aesthetic for a super cute caddy you can store in your dorm without having to hide it away.

4. White Noise Machine
For when your roommate is binge-watching shows while you’re trying to study. The hatch is the perfect option if you want something to last you well into grad school. It has a sunrise alarm to wake up phone free and sleep sounds that help you fall and stay asleep.Restore 3 - Putty colorway front view

5. Command Hooks & Strips
Dorm decor is all fun and games until the paint is peeling, your RA is threatening fines, and you have to be packed and out of there in two hours flat. Command strips and hooks keep your walls safe without having to compromise on your favorite personalized decor.

Final Thoughts: You’ve Got This

College is a big leap — and it’s okay to feel unsure. But showing up prepared (and with items that won’t get confiscated) goes a long way in helping you feel confident. The key isn’t having everything, it’s having the right things. Your dorm should be a place that feels safe, smells fresh, and makes you feel like you.
